Dart River’s Funyak day trip is an amazing journey deep into the heart of the world-renowned Mt Aspiring National Park and one of Queenstown real gems. Get up-close with nature with a gentle paddle on the Dart River and the crystal clear waters of the Beansburn and Rockburn rivers.

Feel the awesome power of the wilderness jet boats as you are whisked up the Dart River, while receiving a full commentary of the area & stopping in plenty of locations for you to capture the outstanding beauty of your surroundings.

Once on-board your ‘Funyak’ inflatable canoe you will be the master of your own destiny, guided down the Dart Valley by your highly trained river guide explaining the unique cultural heritage of the valley and the ancient Greenstone trails. A picturesque and fun way to explore the Dart River as well as hidden side streams, rock pools and dramatic chasms.

Savour the peace and tranquillity of this stunning area at your own pace as you float downstream on sparkling water. Enjoy a sumptuous buffet picnic lunch surrounded by snow-capped peaks and native forest perched on the banks of the river. Paddle your way to Paradise where you finish your Funyak trip set amongst countless movie scenes such as the famous Lord of the rings.

Then sit back and relax on one of Dart Rivers custom build back road coaches as you travel back to Glenorchy through ‘Middle Earth’ as the staff point out the sights and sounds.

Pick ups and drop offs are provided on a scheduled transport circuit and pick up from most central Queenstown accommodation. You can also choose to self drive to the Dart River base in Glenorchy. This is a good option for those wanting more flexibility in their schedule or wish to explore Glenorchy after the tour.


  • Complimentary bus transfers departs from the Queenstown Information Centre - corner Camp and Shotover Streets, Queenstown.


  • Trip departs from the Dart River Jet Safaris Visitor Centre - Mull Street, Glenorchy.


  • Year round – Bring warm underwear or swimwear, a change of underwear and towel. Also, any medication you may need.
  • Summer – Sunglasses, sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, camera and warm outer layer recommended.
  • Winter – Wear thermals and warm clothing plus hat, gloves, woollen socks, windproof jacket, sunglasses, insect repellent and camera.

Take a camera, take a camera, take a camera!!! You travel into Mt aspiring National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Area that is picture postcard. Dart River Jet Safaris provide dry bags for you to store your camera and other belongings in so that they wont get wet while on the water.

If it's winter make sure you bring a warm hat and gloves as it does get a little chilly on the jetboat & an extra layer of thermals will only enhance your experience.

Take some insect repellent, the sandflies can be vicious, but with good repellent they wont come near you.

Can I bring my camera?
Please feel free to take advantage of the stunning scenery of Mt Aspiring National Park and bring your camera. Guides and drivers stop regularly for photo opportunities. In fact the only time cameras are not recommended is during the 360 degree spins which the jet boat drivers will warn you of approximately 10 seconds prior. Please note that Dart River Jet Safaris do operate in a wilderness area and that any camera carried, is carried at the customers own risk.

Can I still participate in the trip if I am pregnant?
Dart River Jet Safaris strongly advise against pregnant people participating in the tour. If you are pregnant and choose to book a seat on the tour, the drivers and guides reserve the right to turn you away should they be concerned.

How wet will I get on the trip?
During the tour you will get wet up to your knees, and possibly (but rarely) further. A wetsuit and wetsuit booties are provided on the tour for this reason, and are required to be worn throughout the entire duration of the trip.

What do I need to bring on the trip?
Dart River Jet Safaris provide all customers with a wetsuit, wetsuit booties, fleeces, spray jackets and dry bags. Sunglasses/eyewear are recommended all year round and during the summer months you should come prepared with your swimwear, sunscreen, insect repellent, sun hat and water. During winter we advise that all customers come with warm hats and gloves, woollen socks, and thermal layers. Cameras are recommended, however are carried at your own risk.
