Book - Routeburn Explorer Canyoning

ROUTEBURN CANYON FULL DAY TOUR

Journey along the shores of the turquoise waters of Lake Wakatipu to the foot of the Southern Alps before driving into Mt Aspiring National Park. Set in this dramatic and rugged landscape you'll delve deep into the Routeburn Valley.

Once geared up in your Canyoning equipment take a stroll into Middle Earth through towering native beach forest to the head of the canyon. From here it's all down hill and time for the real adventure to begin. Surrounded by the imposing sheer rock walls of the Routeburn canyon you'll plunge into pools, cascade down chutes, swim narrow passageways, abseil/rappel waterfalls and swim your way through the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area - the ultimate water activity!

The Routeburn Canyon is not for the faint hearted nor the non swimmers, but an absolute must for all water babies.

Have we done it? Yes we have. Can we recommend it? For sure!

Check out Dave's first hand experience of the Routeburn Canyoning trip on our Blog

Do I have to be able to swim to go canyoning?
Yes, you do need to be able to swim for the full day Routeburn experience. However, if you cannot swim you can join the half day Queenstown trip.

Are the jumps optional?
Yes, if you really don't want to do any of the elements once you are in the canyon they can provide alternative options.

Can I wear my glasses?
We don't recommend you wear glasses in the canyon. Contact lenses are better but can still fall out. If you only have glasses, ensure you have a sports strap or tie and let your guide know before departure. Once again remember they can't guarantee the safety of your glasses so if you can do without them then do.

How do the guides know what size equipment to pack?
Due to the location of the canyon for the full day Routeburn Canyon you must provide your height and weight to help the guides pack the right size equipment for you.

What do I need to bring with me on a canyoning trip?
All you need to do is wear your swimwear, bring a towel and a sense of adventure! Canyon trips are in publicly accessible places so we recommend you do not bring any valuables with you.

What shoes should I wear?
Canyoning provide wetsuit socks (if relevant) and wetsuit booties.

Can I bring my camera?
By all means bring your camera for pictures before and after your trip however, for safety reasons Canyoning strictly request that you DO NOT bring your camera into the canyon with you. A trained canyon photographer will be in attendance on your experience.

Will I get wet?
Yes! However, you will be wearing a wetsuit, bouyancy aid and wetsuit booties. Canyoning is a perfect rainy day activity as you're going to get wet anyway!

Do I need to book a Canyoning experience in advance?
Space can be limited, particularly in peak season so we highly recommend booking in advance.

What is your cancellation policy?
Canyoning require 24 hours notice of your cancellation in order to receive a full refund. No refund is due within 24 hours of your trip departing.

Can I go Canyoning between May to September?
No, due to water and air temperatures in the South Island during this time Canyoning close their operation. Canyoning.co.nz operate trips between October and April.

What is the maximum number of people on a trip?
This is dependent on the number of guides/ photo guides available on the day but they generally work to a 1 - 6 guide guest ratio.

Can my friends/ family watch while I go Canyoning?
No, the canyons are quite hidden from public view and as you are continually moving along the canyon there is not an appropriate place for a spectator to watch safely. The equipment provided allows our customers to access and enjoy otherwise forbidden territory.
