Snow Activities

Book - Heli - Snowshoeing

On top of the world in minutes from Queenstown without the strenuous climb. In this area surrounded by towering jagged mountain peaks and hidden winter alpine life, the only way to access this pristine environment is by helicopter.

Endless mountain-tops, hidden valleys & frozen lakes stretch into infinity, Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu far below. Silence and remoteness surround you in this very special environment where you can hike and explore at leisure.

Once the adrenalin is rushing from your helicopter flight, don a pair of our high-tech snowshoes. Gone are the old tennis racket style snowshoes and in are the new, slim line snowshoes which let you feel as if you are floating across the snow. Then you and your expert guide can explore the snow covered wilderness that surrounds you.

Snowshoeing from Queenstown offers an exciting exploration of the wilderness. Most of the area around Queenstown is 'back country' and offers kilometers of snow in winter for snowshoeing. Snowshoes allow you to walk across unbroken snow without sinking up to your waist, opening up huge possibilities for wilderness exploration.

WHAT IS SNOWSHOEING?

It’s simply walking in snowy conditions. The people of snowy locations the world over have been using snowshoes for centuries to ease their progress on foot, and the ones we use are modern descendants of those original pieces of equipment. Snowshoes help by stopping us sinking in soft snow, and giving us grip if the snow is hard or icy. The snowshoes adjust to almost any boot size, and are very easy to walk in. After a quick fitting, most people are comfortable on their snowshoes and ready to enjoy their day in around 10 minutes.

WHO CAN DO IT?

Everyone!  Like summer hiking, they can make things as easy or challenging as you wish. Small group sizes and a flexible approach ensure Guided Nature Walks accommodate everyone’s needs and abilities. One of the beauties of snowshoeing is that it is non-technical; that is to say that unlike skiing for example, almost anyone can do it without technical instruction or time spent practicing, and yet it gives us access to landscapes that go way beyond the limits of the piste skier.

Guided Nature Walks philosophy is to give guests an interactive nature experience - a hands on understanding of every component of New Zealand's South Island wilderness.

CAN I GO SNOWSHOEING, HOW FIT DO I HAVE TO BE?

Yes - if you can walk you can snowshoe! People of all ages and abilities enjoy snowshoeing you just need a moderate fitness level. Small groups mean they can adjust distance, pace and terrain according to interests and goals.

DO WE HAVE TO GO WITH A GROUP?

Guided Nature Walks also offer all of the Snowshoeing Trips on a privately guided basis for a total wilderness experience. Special lunch is provided and departure times to suit. Adventurous or passive expeditions tailored to suit clients interests. Individual attention.  All fitness and age levels catered for. They like to find out what your preferences are with consideration of weather and snow conditions, they can design the perfect itinerary for you. Contact [email protected] for more details.
