Milford & Doubtful Sounds

Book - Milford Sound Overnight Cruise - Milford Mariner

For the ultimate Milford Sound experience, spend the night aboard the Milford Mariner and wake up to the dawn of a new day in one of the most beautiful places on earth!

Depart from the Milford Sound wharf in the late afternoon and cruise the full length of Milford Sound accompanied by a specialist nature guide. They'll explain the history and geology of the area and be on hand to answer your questions.

The cruise style is relaxed, allowing plenty of time to view the fiord's spectacular waterfalls, rainforest, mountains and wildlife - you're bound to encounter seals and if you're lucky maybe dolphin and penguins

The Milford Mariner then anchors in a sheltered cove, where you can join the nature guide and explore in the vessel's tender craft (small boat) or kayaks. If you prefer, you can simply relax on deck and soak in the beauty of this amazing place or if you're brave enough jump in for a swim.

As evening falls, enjoy a delicious carvery buffet in the dining saloon, prepared freshly by the on-board chef. Then relax in the company of fellow travellers or indulge in some star-gazing before retiring to your cabin.

In the morning, dig into a hearty breakfast before heading back out to the Tasman Sea (weather permitting) and exploring more of the fiord.

What is the difference between the Milford Mariner and Milford Wanderer Overnight Cruises?

Each cruise has the same focus on sharing the wonders of Milford Sound through in-depth commentaries and activities (wildlife viewing and cruising in the tender craft).  However, they do differ:

- the Milford Mariner: offers private cabins with ensuite bathrooms and activities include kayaking or cruising in the tendercraft. Available mid-September to mid-May.

- the Milford Wanderer offers twin-share compartments with shared bathroom facilities and activities include a guided walk on part of the Milford Track or exploring the shoreline by tendercraft.  Available November to March.

Are linen and towels provided on the Milford Sound Overnight Cruises?

Yes, they sure are!

What weather can I expect in Fiordland?

Fiordland’s weather is what gives the region its unique character. Rainfall is what makes Fiordland a land of lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls and fiords. Visitors should always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during their stay. It is recommended to bring sensible clothing for cool and wet weather to fully appreciate your stay.

The temperatures you can expect in the different seasons are as follows:

  • Summer (December-February) 19-23 Celsius / 66 - 73 Fahrenheit
  • Autumn (March-May) 8-18 Celsius / 46 - 64 Fahrenheit
  • Winter (June-August) 5-9 Celsius / 41 - 48 Fahrenheit
  • Spring (September-November) 10-19 Celsius / 50 - 66 Fahrenheit

How much luggage can I take on my overnight cruise?

We recommend each passenger brings no more than a carry-on sized bag due to space restrictions in the cabins.

What is the difference between a double room and a twin room?

A double room is a private room for two people, with one bed to share. A twin room is a private room for two people, with two single beds.
