The road to Glenorchy

Posted by Kate Fahey: 23rd Sep 2015 @ 20:29:29

The most scenic drive in the region, driving the Glenorchy Road is an absolute must do! This 45 minute journey takes you along the edge of Lake Wakatipu, through native Beech Forest, past steep rocky cliffs and delivers exceptional views of the Southern Alps.

There are many places that you may want to pull over and stop for a minute to appreciate the beauty, one in particular is the Bennett's Bluff lookout, which is glaringly obvious when you come across it. The view opens up to the top of the lake, across Pigeon Island and up to Earnslaw Glacier in the distance, the gateway to the Mount Aspiring National Park. Does it get any better than this? Probably not, this is New Zealand in all it's glory!

At the end of the road the quaint township of Glenorchy has been put on map for many reasons from The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies to the incredible Routeburn Track. But you don't need to be a movie fan or a hiker to fall in love with this beautiful place.

If your looking to spend some time and explore this region then we certainly recommend joining an activity or tour to really take in all in. The Dart River Jet boat or Funyak tours take you deep into the national park and show you "Paradise", yes there is a place here called Paradise! There are also 4WD tours, skydiving, horse trekking, canyoning and much more on offer in this spectacular setting.

So whether you are just up for a quite day exploring the scenery or want to combine it with a little more action, Glenorchy has it in bucket loads!
