Water, Water Everywhere

Water, Water Everywhere

With the 2014 ski season now coming to a close, we now start looking to the hills as the solid snow pack that produced so much joy over winter slowly begins its transition from solid to liquid. As the snow begins to melt, waterfalls begin to cascade down the hills and make its way to rivers, then the rivers finally come to rest at the lake. All of this culminates with hot summer days as Queenstown sprouts into a water lover’s dream.

No matter what you like to do in the water or how adventurous you are, if you can’t do it in Queenstown it probably can’t be done – well surfing may be the exception, but we have even adapted to this with the creation of river surfing.

For the faint hearted jump aboard one of the many lake cruises, where informative commentaries about the area will be delivered. Take a journey on the iconic steamship TSS Earnslaw and gently make your way across to Walter Peak where you can stop for lunch or dinner, witness a farm show or partake in a horse trek. Sea Kayak self-hire or guided trips are available on a daily basis, or try the latest craze and give stand up paddle boarding a go.

My personal pick for the soft core water enthusiast would have to be ‘Funyaking’. Effectively a jet boat accessed inflatable canoe trip down the Dart River, tucked away at the top of the Lake in the picturesque Mt Aspiring National Park.

For the more adventurous the world is your oyster! Wizz down sheer walled Shotover canyons in a 720 horse power jet boat at 80km per hour with the world famous Shotover Jet or conquer the rapids of the mighty Shotover River with Queenstown Rafting. Jump off cliffs and abseil down water falls with the team from Canyoning.co.nz or get up close and personal with the Kawarau River as you negotiate the rapids of Chinese Dog Leg, with Serious fun River Surfing. Tear around the lake inside a shark – yes I said shark, as you dive under water and leap back out of it with Hydro Attack. And even turn yourself into a water born missile as you porphorse like a dolphin with the newest water born attraction – Flyboard Queenstown.

Like I said. Queenstown really does have it all when it comes to water. Whether you’re a family, young or old, adventurous or not, then you are guaranteed to find it here!
