An insider’s guide to a relaxing day in Glenorchy

Take the beautiful lakeside drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy, a quaint wee village nestled at the head of Lake Wakatipu with lot’s to offer! The drive itself is rated as one of New Zealand’s Top 10 Drives and as soon as you start winding your way along the mountain lined shores you will quickly see why.

The piece de resistance is rounding the corner at Bennett's Bluff on a clear day and having the mind-blowing vista of open lake, mountains, islands and ancient glaciers open up right before your eyes, quite possibly one of the most memorable panoramic scenes you will ever see. This scene still wows locals who live there every day, no matter the weather!

Once you arrive in the village don’t be fooled by its sleepy appearance …

Best photo spot – The Glenorchy “Red Shed and Jetty” – down on the village lakefront get that world famous photo of the iconic Red Shed and Jetty with the towering mountains and piercing blue lake in the background.

Best Shopping – Mrs Woolly’s General Store – Artful gifts, tasty fresh foods, practical items for home, holiday and lifestyle.  You can even treat yourself to one of their famous Gelato’s!

Best Brunch – The GYC – the best all day brunch around!  A local’s favourite hangout.

Best Coffee - The Trading Post enjoy a relaxing coffee while browsing around their New Zealand focused books, cute and quirky gifts, fun toys, local art and more.

Best Lunch – Bold Peak Lodge – Enjoy a selection of hearty lunch favourites and some great homemade baking.  They can even organize a picnic for you to takeaway and enjoy in the surrounding mountains.

Best Evening Dining – The Glenorchy Hotel – Gastro pub dining with a fantastic selection of local wine and beer.

Best Short Walk – The Lagoon Boardwalk – Once you’ve enjoyed all the delights above, there’s no better way to walk it all off!  Starting from the village lakefront carpark, this easy walk for all the family meanders along the edge of the Rees River before joining the beautiful boardwalk around the local lagoon wetlands.
